In the Faery Realm…

WMFairyPoetsClub8x10

When I was a little girl, we moved from Southern California, to Everette, Washington.  My world transformed from sunny days, sandboxes and orange groves into misty forests, carpeted with moss, mushrooms and ferns.  It was then, I began my obsession and quest to find fairies in the woods behind my house.  I believed in the faery realm and the wee folk that lived among the mushrooms, berry thickets and danced in the rain under the full moon.

I began to ‘read’ my mother’s copy of “Gnomes,” (illustrated by Rien Poortvliet) and “Fungus the Boogeyman” (illustrated by Raymond Briggs).  The world of the fairy was part of my reality as a child and I often left cookies, bits of thread/buttons and ‘gifts’ for the wee ones in the woods.  I led a very magical childhood and did not feel the need to sit in front of the TV watching re-runs, or catatonically stare at an electrical device.  My yard and the adjacent forest was my playground.
